How To Survive Air Travel & Other Long-hauls

Travelling on airplanes (or trains, buses, etc.) for a long period of time can be down right exhausting. You think/hope sitting in one spot for so long, you would get some decent rest, but unfortunately that isn’t the case. Especially when you are trying to make connections, sit next to a snorer, get interrupted by cabin service, etc. you are lucky if you get any rest!

So here are a few tips on how to survive air travel & other long-hauls:

Plan your journey

If you plan on taking a long night bus or a night flight, bring ear plugs, an eye mask, an inflatable pillow, and possibly a sleeping aid. A combination of these four things will make for a very peaceful flight.

Alternatively, catch an early morning flight or ride. You will already be wide awake, so you can squeeze in some on-board movies, read a few books, and chat to your neighbours. If you are passing through scenic landscapes, it is a great chance to get a feel for the country. By the time you arrive in your destination (and hopefully it’s evening when you do), you will be ready for bed.

Pick your seat

If you can pick your seat before you arrive at the airport, that’s great. I always go for the window seat; that way I can fall asleep with my head against the window and not have to worry about leaning on someone else or falling into the aisle.

Stay hydrated and eat healthy

If you eat healthy and drink plenty of water, your body will thank you. It might be a bit more difficult to eat healthy on the plane, but check out their menu. If you are on a bus or train trip, consider going to the supermarket and stocking up on fruits and veggies.  Drink a lot of water and avoid alcohol and caffeine. Caffeine and alcohol won’t help with the jet lag and will make you feel worse overall.

Moisturize your skin

Driving through desserts, changing altitudes, sitting in recycled cabin air, you name it, your skin is going to get dry. Consider bringing make-up remover wipes to wash your face and a light moisturizer to put on afterwards. Your skin will thank you.

Don’t carry on too much stuff

If the overhead bins are full, your bag is going to end up down at your feet…hence reducing your leg room. Either try to get on the plane early and secure your bag in the overhead or pack a little bit less in your bag.

  1. I find wearing a scarf helps too! it can be used as a pillow or a blanket if you’re cold!
