Just Say Yes

"You only get one life so you might as well make it a happy one, and that's why I tend to just jump into things. I'm sort of a fearless idiot that way." -Nia Vardalos

Just say yes. The best part of travelling is exploring the unknown and just jumping in. There has been times when I thought to myself, "Should I do this?" and then I push aside the little voice in my head that says, "No you shouldn't." It is because I like to jump in to things wholeheartedly and take chances. Every day life routine can wear me down, so when I have the chance for adventure, I take it.  I would say 98% of the time, it has turned out great.

What were a few times that I said yes instead of saying no?

Accepting Rides From Strangers

I have done this a few times (sorry mom!). When I was in Australia, I met a couple of people in my hostel that were leaving Sydney the next morning for Melbourne. They offered me a ride, and since I was planning on heading down that way anyways, I accepted it. It turned out to be a pretty fun road trip. We spent 5 days travelling through the mountains, stopping in little cities, and camping in the middle of nowhere.  The bus would have gotten me down to Melbourne in a day, but then I wouldn’t have explored the countryside or met some interesting people.

Changing My Plans On A Whim

New Zealand

New Zealand

Hanging out in a hostel bar in Australia one night, I met another Canadian. We were talking about the Rocky Mountains and he mentioned to me that he was heading to majestic mountain town of Queenstown, New Zealand with some friends that week.  He said, “Hey, if you are interested, you should head down. It is a beautiful country and there is tons to do outside.”

I booked my trip the next day. As I was booking my trip, I called my parents to let them know what I was doing. To my surprise, my parents told me I had an aunt, an uncle, and a cousin in Christchurch. I ended up meeting them for the first time in 20 years. I made some wicked friends and met my foreign family, all because I decided to change my plans.

Eating “New” Food

Some food sounds horrible. Imagine hearing that you are going to eat a sheep’s stomach…and it’s filled with the sheep’s heart, liver, and lungs; ground up with some onions, oatmeal, and spices. Sounds pretty gross…but haggis (a traditional Scottish dish) is ridiculously good. I had it once and I was hooked. I’m pretty sure I ate it a minimum of twice a day when I was in the land of kilts.

Facing My Fears

Everyone has fears. I think the most common fear is the fear of heights. As humans, we are programmed to keep our two feet on the ground, but there is nothing I love more than jumping off of things. It terrifies me to the extreme, but after I realize I am not going to die, the adrenaline surges and before I know it, I am having the time of my life

So say yes to adventure, to taking chances, to the unknown. You never know if you are going to find a new favourite dish, meet some new people, or overcome a fear. You only get one life, live it up.
