San Sebastian….Castles and Beaches

The great thing about Spain is the diversity. There are the old towns…dating back hundreds of years and then a few blocks over, you are strolling through the most modern streets. Throw in an idyllic beach and you have the perfect holiday destination of San Sebastian, a coastal town located in the north of Spain. I could have easily packed up my life in Canada and moved here.

There are two large crescent-shaped beaches, surrounded by green, lush mountains. The swimming beaches, La Concha Beach and Ondarreta Beach, are almost enclosed by Mount Urgull and Mount Igueldo, making it the perfect swimming area.  After a nice hike up Mount Urgull, I relaxed at the Mota Castle and took in the views. From the top of the hill, I could see all of San Sebastian, from the mountains in the south to the ocean in the north.  I easily spent my day on the mountain, exploring the different trails and views.

If hiking and castles aren’t your thing, get your tan on at the beach or rent a surf board and try the waves. I’m not much of a surfer….I’m pretty terrible actually, so I just laid back in the sand and watched them hit the waves. With such beautiful coastline surrounding me, I spent the whole day at the beach, soaking up the sun and relaxing…and by relaxing I mean napping. How great is it to fall asleep in the sun, listening to the sound of the ocean? Then to wake up a couple of hours later, refreshed, tanned, and ready to hit the town! My suggestion for you: cancel your current vacation plans and go to San Sebastian. You’ll thank me later.
